IMPORTANT PROMOTION FOR DUBROVNIK AND CROATIA IN THE US MARKET

DUBROVNIK AND CROATIA IN NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE

In the 8th June New York Times article for their online and print edition entitled 'For Summer, Five Hot Destinations' it is said that Americans are planning to travel more than last year, mostly in order to flee insecurity. Croatia is included in top five destinations which the journalist Shivani Vora recommends for this summer and the country is on top of the list, followed by Greece, South Africa, The Maldives and Italy. It is precisely Croatia that is mentioned as the safest country, which is currently one of the most important factors when choosing a destination. The article quotes Josh Alexander, a travel adviser at the New York City-based Protravel International, whose many clients opted for Croatia this year: “The beaches are fantastic, the food is delicious, and there’s culture and history, what more can you wish for?”  Some travel agents have had a 30 percent increase in trip bookings to Croatia for travel this summer, compared with summer 2016, and some have doubled their bookings.

Since 2015, the Croatian National Tourist Board, with its office in New York has been a member of 'Virtuoso', a network of the best international travel agents for organizing luxury trips, which besides tour operators, tourist agencies, travel advisors, airline companies, cruise companies, prestigious hotels and hotel chains also gathers national tourist boards. The Dubrovnik Tourist Board entered this marketing project in order to increase the visibility of Dubrovnik in the huge US market, especially in the luxury travel segment. The Virtuoso Network has an annual turnover of more than 14 billion USD, which makes it the most important organization in the luxury travel industry.

In March last year the Director of the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, Romana Vlašić, held a webinar for 161 representatives of US travel agents from the Virtuoso Network. The webinar was part of the educational program Advisor Development Training – Learning Engagement Advisor Program (L.E.A.P.) and it presented Dubrovnik in order to better show its tourist offer, with special regard to high-category hotels, excursions to nearby destinations, festivals, gastronomy and all the segments of the tourist offer which can be of interest to affluent travellers. The participants of the webinar had the opportunity to ask questions in a special question box and Romana Vlašić provided answers at the end of the presentation.

The US market is of extreme importance for Dubrovnik and the numbers related to it have seen a constant increase. In 2016 there were 80.961 US tourists which marked 234.984 overnight stays. From 1st January until 10th June, 30.372 US tourists stayed in Dubrovnik, which is 41% more than in the same period last year. They also marked 91.128 overnight stays, which is 42% more than in 2016. After the British, Americans have been the second most numerous visitors to Dubrovnik so far this year.
