World Tourism Day - Accessible for Everyone
On Tuesday, September 27th the City of Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board are organising the celebration of World Tourism Day, whose theme this year as highlighted by UNWTO – the World Tourism Organization – is ˝Tourism and Accessibility˝. The program for World Tourism Day will begin in the morning with the a capella group Klapa Subrenum, champagne and cake, and greeting by Mayor Vlahušić at 12 noon. The commemorative award ˝Champion of Tourism˝ that Dubrovnik was awarded in 2016 by Večernji list will be presented at 7 pm, followed by a concert of the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra with a repertoire of classic evergreens.
The theme of this year's World Tourism Day dedicated to accessibility in tourism or tourism for all, seeks to highlight the need for accessibility of tourism and spreading the message about the importance and benefits of universal accessibility in society today. According to estimates by the World Tourism Organization, fifteen percent of the world's population lives with some form of disability. This is therefore a billion people who may not be able to enjoy the privileges of learning about other cultures, natural beauty or the excitement of traveling.
In order to show the tools and features that make it easier for persons with disabilities to access Dubrovnik's tourist attractions, the City of Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board will organize a demonstration of the Multiple Sclerosis Society's transporter, which facilitates entry to cultural facilities using a wheelchair. Also, a map for the blind that was made in 2012 by the Dubrovnik Lions Club and created in Braille by Dubrovnik high school students will be presented, and there will be a brief presentation of guided tours in sign language in collaboration with the Dubrovnik Tour Guides Association and sign language interpreter Ana Liban.
It is noteworthy that the many beaches in Dubrovnik such as Copacabana beach, Solitudo beach and in Zaton have elevators for persons with disabilities.
Along with World Tourism Day, the City of Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board will mark the realisation of 3 million overnight stays, which was achieved 20 days earlier this year, with an appearance by Mayor Vlahušić at 12 noon in front of the Church of St. Blaise, and a champagne toast, a large commemorative cake, and a concert by the a capella group Klapa Subrenum.
The evening part of the program will also be held in front of the Church of St. Blaise beginning at 7 pm. The editor in chief of Večernji list Dražen Klarić will present the award ˝Champion of Tourism 2016˝ to Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahušić. The ˝Champion of Tourism˝ award ceremony will also be attended by the CEO of Večernji list Andrea Borošić and the Director of the Central Office of the Croatian Tourist Board Ratomir Ivičić has confirmed his attendance. The award ceremony will also be attended by the Director of the Dubrovnik Tourist Board Romana Vlašić.
After the ceremony, there will be a concert by the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra that will perform classical evergreens and film music, with a solo performance by the jazz group Gadjo Manouche.
